OPERATION MODES IN SAP

Purpose:

This document is written with the procedure of creating/changing the operation modes in SAP system. Every SAP System can have several application servers to support effective load balancing. Application server will have a dispatcher and set of work processors like dialog, background, update, enqueue and spool work processes depending upon the usage of the system.

Operation modes let you flexibly adapt the system configuration to varying requirements, maximizing the use of available system resources.

An operation mode defines a resource configuration for the instances in your system. It can be used to determine which instances are started and stopped, and how the individual services are allocated for each instance in the configuration.

You can define operation modes to suit specific system requirements, for example, to provide additional dialog or background processing resources during a particular period of time without having to restart the system. For example during the day time maximum number of users will be working who need to execute the dialog steps so more number of dialog work processors must be present in an instance during the day time. Similarly during the night time only very less number of users will be there so the system can be used for processing background jobs with more number of background work processes.

Procedure:

We can create/monitor operations mode in SAP t-code RZ04. After entering the RZ04 following screen will appear:

For creating Operation mode select Operation mode à Create

On next screen fill the details and save

Assign operation mode to instances; click Instance/Operation modes à Click create. In this we can change the operation mode switch and the number of work processes of each type as well

To change the work process distribution, position the cursor on the number of work processes, then choose ‘+’ or ‘-’. The work processes are redistributed automatically.

You can only change the assignment of work processes to services in the Number of work processes group box. You cannot change the total number of work processes, or the start or system profiles.

Save your changes. The changes will take effect when the operation mode is next activated.
